Safe realestate in Costa Rica

Costa Rica Retirement and Real Estate Tour

With over 76 million US baby boomers retiring in the next 20 years, many are considering overseas retirement to take advantage of a lower cost of living, better climate and overall, a higher quality of life.  Costa Rica has been on the radar screen of baby boomers for many years and continues to this day.  In Costa Rica, retirees and baby boomers generally are considering living options in quaint towns in and around San Jose in the Central Valley or along the country’s Pacific Coast.  Some others have ended up in more remote areas in the far northern reaches of the country while the more adventurous are considering the Caribbean coast.   However, the vast majority of North American retirees and baby boomers are either in the Central Valley or along the Pacific Coast.

People continue to visit Costa Rica in droves seeking terrific places to live and to invest in real estate.  Oftentimes, the more independent-minded single or couple can be found traversing the country on their own, meeting people and looking for opportunities.  While it is possible to discover on your own all that this great country has to offer, taking an organized retirement tour such as Boomers in Costa Rica,  http://www.boomersincostarica.com, provides a structured, safe and well-researched approach to considering a move here.  Taking one of our tours, whether the 4-day/3-night Central Valley tour or Pacific Coast tour, are easy to arrange, convenient, and manageable for most people.   You’ll need a valid passport and a flight into San Jose (SJO), the country’s capital.  Generally, flights range from as low as $230 roundtrip per person to $600 roundtrip depending on where in North America you live.  It is important to arrive in Costa Rica the day before your tour so you can rest and be prepared to start early the next morning.  It is also a good idea to stay a few days after the tour just in case you’d like to go back and further explore some of the areas you saw on the tour, look at properties you may have liked or enjoy additional time with people you met during the tour.

Once here, your “working vacation” begins.  The tour helps people address a major issue and that is whether Costa Rica for full-time retirement living or partial-year vacation home living makes sense given a person’s or couple’s interests and budget.  By meeting people who have already moved here and tapping into the expertise and experience of your tour guides, you’ll likely come up with issues you hadn’t thought of prior to coming to Costa Rica. The tour could also reinforce your initial decision to move here or you may find that Costa Rica just isn’t for you.  Either way, it is an investment in the next chapter of your life.  The tour also helps people address some broad questions including:

• What type of environment do I wish to live in?  Rural area?  Suburban?  Urban?  Gated community? Within the Tico community?
• What climate is most desirable?  Living near the ocean with year-round tropical temperatures?  Quaint mountain towns in the Central Valley with a more moderate and less humid climate?
• How can I tap into a network of people I can trust?
• How do I know if I’m getting a good deal on real estate?
• Where do I find honest and responsible professionals such as attorneys, architects, doctors, and others who can help me as I transition to a new life in Costa Rica?
• Will I really like it here?

In addition to answering these important questions, among many others, the tour aims to focus on four key areas of exploration: a.) evaluating a range of towns suitable for ex-pat living, b.) identifying the shopping, services, cultural and recreational activities available in these towns, c.) meeting people who have already made the move here so you can begin building your network of contacts and obtain real “insiders” knowledge on living here, and, d.) uncovering suitable and valued-priced living options whether resale homes, condominiums or land in which to build a home.

A tour also provides a more structured way to get answers to many specific questions such as learning how to obtain residency, how to find doctors and medical facilities that can address your specific health issues, how to legally buy property and what to watch out for, how to open a bank account, getting insurance for your home and automobile, and what to expect in terms of a monthly budget, among many others questions.

I’ve seen several of these companies that are catering to retired investors. My main concern is avoiding a company that suddenly ropes you into a time-share. Are there truly organizations that are just offering objective “tours” of various properties?

  2. Danny Says:

My wife I went on one of this type of tour in Panama and we loved it. It was a great way to kill two birds with one stone, so to speak. We were able to do some sightseeing and shop for our investment property. I understand how someone would be concerned about scams but just like everything else you should do research on a company before you sign up for the tour.

  3. Janice Says:

Are there real estate tours that are similar to this but not geared towards retirees?

  4. Andrew Mastrandonas Says:

Hi, I’m Andrew the owner of Boomers in Costa Rica Tours and I am going to respond to Margaret, Danny and Janice’s comments in one big comment! On MARGARET’s comment, the “retirement/real estate tours” operating in Costa Rica, including mine, are not involved in time shares. I loathe them just as much as many people do! Our tour is designed to do three things: 1.) Help you decide if Costa Rica is right for you as a retirement place or to live part-time, 2.) Discover what communities might work for you and what they have to offer in terms of services, medical care, shopping and culture; and 3.) Introduce to you real estate professionals and properties that we have carefully screened. We only work with people we know and trust 100% because in many cases, past clients have become our neighbors and we want them to feel at home. On DANNY’s comment, yes, research everyone including us. If you happened to be interested in taking one of our tours, I would be happy to give you the phone numbers and email addresses of past clients so you can contact them directly and check us out. I strongly believe that every mistake comes back to haunt at some point and Costa Rica is a small community so it is important to us to everything above board and ethically–there’s no better way to be successful in this business, and any business for that matter. On JANICE’S comment, the reason we created “Boomers in Costa Rica” was not only to cater to retirees, but to also assist others who may be several years away from retirement and may want to secure land or a house now, use it occasionally and then move in full time (or part-time) at retirement. We also set up the tour for those people wanting to make an investment in Costa Rica, which is why we work with a select, small group of credible companies like BuySafe Costa Rica. So, if you are interested in an investment, we would be happy to scout that out for you and/or organize a private tour (which we do often) that caters to your specific needs.

Thanks for all of your great comments! I’m happy to help in anyway I can!

    Andrew Mastrandonas
