Family Dentistry in Costa Rica

We just had our annual family dental visit in Costa Rica and I am still amazed at the high quality work we receive at such a low price.  Together, as a family of four, we had three teeth pulled, four cavities filled, and one impression made for a crown.  The dentist spent two hours out of his day with us, and our total charge for this visit was $90.00 USD.

There are many dentists all over Costa Rica, and I highly recommend Dr. Daniel Mora Mora in San Isidro.  He is gentle and thorough with the newest equipment available.  If possible, I recommend scheduling appointments at least two months in advance.

Starting in May I will technically be a seasonal resident staying in San Jose. Does anyone have suggestions on dentists in the area that would specialize in emergency care? I figure it’s better to get a recommendation now rather than waiting until something happens:)

I assumed the healthcare in Costa Rica would be similar in quality to North America. While doing some research I came across an interesting article on Costa Rica healthcare at the CostRica HQ site. The good news is the healthcare in CR is much better than in the US by just about any measurement.

I recommend Dr.Zuria Gonzalez. She has over twenty years of experience and has emergency services available. Her English is great and the staff is also bilingual, which is a huge plus.

My husband needs a knee replacement surgery, but he lost his insurance last year, and they want over $60,000 to do the surgery. I have heard that they are offering these types of surgery in Costa Rica at a fraction of the costs. Can anyone provide more specific information?

I’m not sure about the medical costs or expertise of the physicians in Costa Rica but you may want examine other options. You should do extensive research prior to committing to the procedure, regardless of the location. My brother in-law lives in Michigan and he went to Canada several years ago for his hip replacement surgery. Their publicly funded healthcare system can provide services at a significant discount compared to US rates. I’m assuming that you currently live in the US and since you will probably have to do several pre and post-op visits this maybe a more convenient destination to have the operation.

I had a friend that had a knee replacement surgery done in San Jose. He ended up paying less than 10K and has not had any problems since his recovery. i will have to ask him where the surgery took place and post it later.
