Puerto Jimenez is located on Southern part of the Osa Peninsula on the Golfo Dulce (Sweet Gulf) and is across the bay from Golfito. This area has long been called “The Secret Place” with its beauty and biodiversity; Considered by the National Geographic Society to be the most bio-diverse place on earth. The Osa Peninsula has a total population of approximately 7,000 people with approximately 3,000 people living in or near Puerto Jimenez.

With the closest paved road being 42 miles away the town of Puerto Jimenez has long been considered the last frontier in Costa Rica. Things are quickly changing in the Puerto Jimenez area with the road improvements taking place; they will be paving the road all the way to Corcovado National Park, soon Puerto Jimenez will no longer be the last frontier.

The main part of town is just four blocks wide by seven blocks long. It has an airport serviced by both Sansa Airlines and Nature Air, several ferries a day to Golfito, and bus service. With three large grocery stores, a hardware store, one 24 hour gas station and the National Bank to take care of the day-to-day necessities.

Puerto Jimenez has many nice hotel accommodations ranging from modest with air conditioning and color television for $20.00 a night to the elite places like Crocodile Bay Lodge and Parrot Bay Village offering deep sea fishing and plush accommodations. There are also several wonderful restaurants, a few fun bars, and three internet cafes to take care of you internet needs.

For the outdoor enthusiast there are opportunities such as, hiking, deep sea fishing, swimming & canoeing in the bay and, whale & dolphin watching tours, bird watching, wild animals to numerous to mention and for the more adventurous kayaking in the mangroves, horseback riding, feeding crocodiles and jungle canopy zip line tours.

Costa Rica’s largest National Park, Corcovado is located on the Pacific side of the peninsula. The park contains 120,000 square acres of primary forest with an additional 24,000 square acres in adjoining National Reserve Property. Exotic and lush, Corcovado National Park is home to thirteen major ecosystems that protects over 140 different mammal species; 400 bird species including the Harpy Eagle and the Quetzal; 116 amphibian and reptile species, including 4 different species of sea turtles; 500 species of trees and 40 species of fish.
